Meet the international coordinators who play a key role in supporting thousands of international students in Hungary. We continue our portrait series highlighting international coordinators who are dedicated to advancing the internationalisation of Hungarian higher education. Today, we feature someone who has been overseeing the SH program since its inception!

Erzsébet Veres, currently an International Education Advisor at Obuda University, has been involved with the Stipendium Hungaricum program since its start. She first served as an institutional coordinator at Corvinus University of Budapest, later at the National University of Public Service, and finally at Obuda University until the summer of 2024.

In recognition of her support and dedication to the internationalization of higher education, Erzsébet was honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the 2024 Hungarian International Coordinators’ Annual Meeting in Debrecen.

At the award ceremony, her outstanding career journey was recognized, accompanied by the reading of her nomination, which highlighted her accolades, experience, and expertise:

“Erzsébet Veres is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable coordinators. It is unlikely that there is any international mobility program she has not dealt with, and thousands of participants certainly gained international experience with her assistance. She has always been characterized by a continuous drive for renewal and self-improvement, and she has consistently shared her accumulated knowledge with her fellow coordinators across various forums. For decades, she was an active member of this community.”

Why do you consider the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship program important?

The program has transformed the international community at universities, as students are now arriving from many countries that were not previously represented. Institutions have developed programs in foreign languages and improved their services, allowing for an influx of self-financed students as well. The presence of international students enhances the institution’s position in international rankings. Moreover, the presence of foreign students contributes to the internationalization of local students who do not participate in mobility programs. Often, university relationships with foreign institutions have been established with the help of graduating doctoral students, and they may play an increasingly important role in the future.

We asked her to share a special memory from her decades of experience working with international students.

"I still remember the first 5-6 Vietnamese students at the start of the program, who came in mid-August. Despite the summer holiday season, we managed to arrange everything so they could begin their studies. Two years ago, at an alumni meeting organized by the Tempus Public Foundation in Ho Chi Minh City, I ran into one of them who remembered me, and it was heartwarming to hear how fondly he spoke of his studies and his time in Hungary. The moments I cherished most in my work were during intercultural events, where international students, with sparkling eyes, shared stories about their customs and culture, which they were so proud of."

When asked about her proudest accomplishments with the program, Erzsébet emphasized its solid organization, the strong partnership with colleagues at the Tempus Public Foundation, the increasing interest from institutions, the expanding diversity of participating countries, and the collective efforts of the coordinator community. Her career stands as a significant and fruitful contribution to the ongoing efforts to internationalize Hungarian higher education.
